Small Animals
Mammals throughout the world are divided into 27 categories, or orders. One of these is the primates, to which people and apes belong.
Another of these “orders” is called the Rodentia. However, not all “small furries” belong to this group. Animals we often call rodents should actually be divided into two orders: These are:
- Lagomorpha (rabbits, hares)
- Rodentia (mice, rats, gerbils, chinchillas, ferret and hamsters)
Only the animals from the order of the Rodentia are actual rodents. For this reason we name all these animals, Small Animals on our web-site.
A big difference between the orders can be found in their food. Lagomorphs usually eat lots of grass, herbs, twigs and leaves. They are herbivores, therefore. Rodents eat many different types of food. They eat grass, cereals and herbs, but also fruits, and some eat meat. Many rodents are omnivores, therefore. Their bodies are designed to digest all these different types of food.
For this reason we name these animals, Small Animals on our web-site.
