behaviour

Birds have their own behaviour. Often, this behaviour seems to mimic human behaviour; birds like to play and ask for attention too.
Birds always need mental stimulation. They must be kept busy, otherwise they will get bored. The consequences of boredom can be feather plucking, but vandalism is also commonly displayed.

With this in mind, you should ask yourself if your bird is really showing bad behaviour, or is it only bored, when it is trying to eat holes in your shoes or trying to break down its cage.

To prevent boredom you can give your bird toys. Birds love all things they can gnaw on, chew, pluck and pull. Colours and sounds are also very interesting for a bird. Try to change the toys regularly, so your bird will not get bored with them. You can reuse a toy every few weeks. Your bird will enjoy it as much as the first time.
Sticks are also a lot of fun for your bird to pick and drag around. Willow sticks are easy to get and they are a pleasure for your bird. Gnawing sticks also keeps the beak in good condition.

The bird family

In the wild, birds often live in groups. In captivity, a bird considers everything in its environment as part of its group. You and your family also belong to your bird’s group. Because your bird considers you as his companion (forgetting you cannot fly), you must be careful your bird does not consider itself as leader of the group. You must train your bird that you are the leader.
Generally, antisocial bird behaviour is caused by an inappropriate hierarchy, in which the bird is the boss and you are its inferior. This might even lead to your bird getting stressed because of the pressure of taking decisions! You definitely do not want to hear this. Therefore, it is important to play with your bird. You can teach your bird commands, as a result of which you stay the boss, and your bird will lead a more comfortable life
You must also make sure your bird is shared with the other members of the family. The more contact between the members of the family and the bird, the more pleasure the bird will have in its life and the more pleasure you will have from your bird.
